What is the ITIL Manifesto and why is it needed?Edit

"The ITIL Manifesto allows existing ITIL concepts to be easily understood by a diverse audience. It is a single set of simple principles, driven by the community."

- Definition as of 16 Jan 2015 as voted for in the Back2ITSM Facebook Community following the first ITIL Manifesto Google Hangout

Why is it needed?Edit

The original twitter conversation between Claire Agutter, Stuart Rance, James Finister, Suresh GP, Barclay Rae and Kaimar Karu highlighted some of the problems experienced by practitioners when trying to summarise or communicate the key principles behind ITIL. Barclay Rae referred to the ITIL manifesto as "the simple list of first principles ITIL never had."

The following list identifies some key drivers of the ITIL Manifesto (source: Summary document as presented at ITSM14 on the Phase 2 Output page)

  • ITIL Manifesto is the simple list of first principles we never had.
  • It provides fast answers to tactical questions that 5 books struggled with.
  • It tells us what ITIL really values (and what you should too).
  • It promotes ITIL, but it’s also a check & balance.
  • It looks for pragmatism and practicality rather than dogma.
  • The community gets to influence the future direction of ITIL.
  • AXELOS gets community insight, drive and ownership.

What is the ITIL Manifesto Initiative?Edit

A community driven effort (with the knowledge and support of the Intellectual Property holder Axelos Ltd) to add structure to existing or new ideas on how ITIL is viewed/used/adopted and to create a manifesto which formalises these principles.

This initiative is open to everyone to participate, irrespective of qualifications, ITIL experience or job role.

Google HangoutsEdit

Google hangouts are sometimes run to introduce new contributors to the ITIL Manifesto or talk about specific topics.

We ran two Google Hangouts on Air in January (as well as some smaller working group hangouts advertised on the Back2ITSM facebook group and twitter. The two hangouts on air were recorded and can be found in this youtube playlist:

Ways of working and how to join inEdit

As of March 2015, the main place for collaboration on work-in-progress items is a basecamp project. To request access to this in order to join in, please use this form .

The basecamp project also links to other tools we're using to build the manifesto, and finished products are published on this wiki.
